How it Grows

out of season pumpkin!

Back in November I was inspired by a friend to create a pumpkin. Here it is finally! I loved my new sewing machine for the beginning stages and the label.

Field trip down Wade Hampton

I took my watercolor students to Shinola, a wonderful antique/art/funk shop. The shop owners are very friendly with down-home hospitality. They let us snap reference photos for future watercolors to our hearts content. After, we hopped over to The Fix- a thin green triangle coffee shop with lot of pizzazz. IMG_6185

Sewing class

I’ve been in a Thursday evening sewing class at Bernina for the last few months. We learned all kind of stitches that I thought were only possible by hand- amazing! I am still a beginner on the machine- but here are some ah ha! samplers we did in class.

cool morning light

I love the changing of seasons. It is pretty windy, but the sun was shinning this weekend, which makes me want to take part in its happiness. This morning before church, I ran around catching the light.

Small quick fiber sculptures?

A new challenge I’ve presented to myself is to make small fiber sculptures. I assumed the “quick” part would come with that. But, I’m finally convinced that “fiber” and “fast” do not come together, unless the fibers are left un-embellished. (and the details are what it is all about if you are making something small, right)? All-in-all they are still fun to make though.

If I become impatient, painting is always welcoming.

Here are a few “bits of earth.” Each rock base is approximately 3 x 4.IMG_5996IMG_6023

Progression of "Anticipation"

An overview of a life: what and who comes in and out of that life, what knowledge is gained, both the pleasant and the difficult experiences, the mistakes and the choices: all of these elements change me. Growth is the positive change that results from these influences. Each influence leaves its mark to ensure that my life is never static.

Just as humans slowly change and mature, so do plants. Outer influences transform both forms of life. A seed begins its existence inside a covering. protected from things harmful to its maturity. Here the seed is vulnerable. The seed receives nutrients within the pod designed for its particular stage of development. This protective covering is good.

For my show, I made one piece to “grow” throughout the show. About every other day I added something new. Here is a little of its progression. My inspiration came from many different plants throughout the show and I decided the changes as I went along. Since I also was “wondering” what I would change- this gave the students and faculty in the building the opportunity to have that same “wondering/anticipating” that I feel every time I work on a piece intuitively.

Grad show opening

Laura Smith and I got it up- her ceramics and my fiber. Late nights and early mornings well worth it. Praise God. Come by and take a look or just get a glimpse through posted photos. It will be up in the Sargent Art Building on Bob Jones campus until Dec. 3rd.
